Several years ago, Hanshi Duessel
became concerned about finding ways to enhance Isshinryu training and skill
levels in the US and to strengthen the IWKA organization under Master
Shimabuku. To this end, Hanshi Duessel has been visiting many IWKA
dojos around the country and offering low fee workshops in these schools.
He has added to this kind of
effort and training by developing his tape and DVD of 14 basic, Isshinryu
katas to provide a standard for students and instructors alike to review and
use as a standard. His commentaries in these recordings touch on
important points of these katas and demonstrate a sampling of the training
that has come to be so appreciated by so many students and instructors.
We all profit from his model as an instructor. His book, co-authored
with Don Washabaugh 7th Dan, "Beyond Black Belt; How to Improve Your
Training" will live on as a timeless set of principles for guiding training
and life for serious Isshinryu practitioners.
In an effort to recognize those
who demonstrate their ongoing commitment to developing their Isshinryu
skills by attending workshops he or his directly trained and authorized
black belts have provided, he has developed the WHD Affiliates Program.
Over time, he hopes to see this
red patch on the right sleeve of Gis indicating the wearer's attendance at
these workshops and their active affiliation with him and his goals.
The more students who register with The Affiliation, the more he will be
able to respond to a Dojo's interest in having one of his high level
seminars. Affiliates will also receive a news letter and other
opportunities from the Affiliation. Membership to support the effort
and to receive specialized training is $35 to join and $15/year for
continued membership. |
